Case Study-5

Rohingya refugees arrived in Bangladesh in August 2017 from Myanmar. Ms. Khurshida Begum (38) with her 2 daughters, a son and husband also entered in Bangladesh with them and started living in Rohingya Camp No. 19, Block-D-3. Her husband passed away before 2 years ago in Rohingya camp affected by cancer. All families in Rohingya camps receive monthly rations of rice, pulses, lentil, oil etc. but have little access to other sources of food like vegetable for nutrition. There is very little space to cultivate vegetable and they had not the idea how to grow vegetables in little space.

Once Ms. Khurshida Begum got the opportunity to participate in 12 days ‘Permaculture Design Course’ in February 2022 through BASD’s “Permaculture Gardening for Nutrition Development for Rohingya Refugee & Host Communities” Project, financed by Tearfund Australia. After receiving the training Ms. Khurshida Begum is able to make the hanging gardening through the vermi compost and organic fertilizer. Now she is enjoying own produced organic and fresh vegetables. Excess vegetables she sells to others. She is grateful to BASD and the Donor for this help.
